There's a coil in one of the legs that serves to both detect and propel the balls as they roll around the circular track. An 8051 derivative hidden in the base measures the balls' velocities, then controls them so that they stay 180 degrees apart from each other. A pal of mine did the machining and electronics. I wrote the firmware and spent many days polishing the aluminum parts. -- Russ |
