I've put a couple of 8255 schematics up on my "user page" including the attachment methodology.

I like your notion of using an 'HC646, since it can work both as a registered transceiver and as a buffer, and in either direction. It can apparently even be used in loopback mode with the correct stimulus. Combined with that simple decoding circuit I posted, or something equally simple, and a couple of gates and flipflops, it can support not only the transfers but auto-handshaking as well. Unfortunately, it provides only one port.

I'll be putting up a couple of additional schematics with some additional features. Let me know what you think.
