That was just a cross-reference to the thread on this forum about the value of teaching students to do long division. The point of that thread is what Jez is lamenting in his post. By providing the cross-reference I was saying that I agree with his lamentation. I was also saying that there is a reason they don't teach such things anymore, because too many people are only concerned with learning how and don't want to be bothered to learn why. It's a matter of wanting knowledge without the burden of understanding or the discipline of wisdom, and it is indeed sad. It is the reason that a little knowledge is said to be a dangerous thing.
