It surely is a matter of taste!
I haven't programmed AVR yet but did with PIC16.
It has it flaws but one can work with it.

IMHO one thing is the most important: pick the right one for the right task and the right one you can handle.

Why learn AVR when a small motor control can be done with 8051 too and you as a developer have no experience yet with the AVR but a lot with the 8051?
Anyone the tool and chip he is familiar with when clock speed ain't no real issue!
