Symbol sold an 8032 based line of hand held terminals 15 or so years ago. Some might still be on eBay. They have since move through DOS, PalmOS, and to Windows CE.

The printers used to be attached to the bottom. People prefer it on their hip. You could do it, but if you are looking to make a product you need to look at the competition. And, the tooling. that is where the NRE builds up.
