For an indication of the effort that is put into cracking smart cards just search for DSS satellite cracks. To the individual this service is worth $100 / month. To the company it is a billion dollar industry.
That system started with primitive smart cards and is up to 5th generation cards now with no end in sight. From what I have read the consortium behind the DSS satellite system is extremely proactive in dealing with these issues. They apparently go as far as locking out the memory chip in the receiver thus making it necessary to either buy a new receiver or remove the memory chip from the mother board and mount it into a header for a parallel programmer to reset the locks and reinstall the correct code. Even that does not seem to deter these hackers who are trying to save $100/month I can only guess the ramifications of trying to protect something that has real significant value such as banking information or secret company documents. Fortunatly most software used in embeddedd systems is so dedicated that it is easier to roll your own than steal it because to use it you must also steal the hardware. Terry |
