Have you informed the chip manufacturer?

Oh, Ian, do you really think they don't know?

Of course they know. I mentioned it because they are the one other party you can be sure is interested in stopping it. Any information you can give them will help keep your product secure and make the manufacturer gratefull to you.

Not quite so. In fact, if you read some data sheets, they implicitly agree to the existence of code breakers and have limited liability clauses.

See this excerpt from a datasheet of PIC16F914 (Not verbatim as I am not able to cut - paste from the PDF)
Microchip said:

- Microchip 'believes' that its family of products is one of the most secure in the market today when used in the 'intended manner and under normal conditions'
- There are dishonest and illegal methods used to breach the code protection feature. All of these methods, to our knowledge, require using the products outside the operating conditions specified in the datasheet. Most likely the person is involved in theft of intellectual property
- Neither Microchip nor any other manufacturer can guarantee the security of their code.Code protection does not mean that the product is unbreakable.
