At this stage its enough to see what is happening at the other end of your link. Have you got a way of seeing if things are "better" or "worse" than they were with the UART idea ?

Then you need to think about how to attenuate the signal reliably to see how your link handle noise etc.

Dan was quite right - you need to use a CRC or some other kind of error detection scheme. Probably 4 years ago, we had a thread on the topic initiated by me, when I discovered that a 16 bit CRC was not reliable enough as a method of detecting bad data in a RF data stream, going through proper bought in RF modems.
