Doesn't that depend on what the rate and nature of the data acquisition is? While it's true that most MCU app's don't require high data rates, acquisition is sometimes in bursts and it's easier to shuffle the data off via a FIFO and let the host PC do the buffering if it's necessary, rather than including a buffer memory on the MCU side.

You're right, of course, in that most MCU tasks operate a much lower rates, but one shouldn't just rule out higher rates with a hand-wave, so long as the USB side can deal with it.
