Used for what protocol? Keyboard/mouse? Video? Serial port? Networking? Disk interface?
Note that USB often demands a lot from the processor, and you don't have as much choices of fast 8051 chips if going for DIP.

In many situations involving USB, you would either prefer an external USB-to-serie chip or look at a different processor.
