New PC PSU have multiple separated 12V supplies (not just multiple wires from same huge 12V supply) for optimum load balancing and regulation. But the PSU still have to feed a lot of current at 5V to disk drives. They haven't moved fully towards the 12V supply - probably because the smaller form-factor disks only have 5V - or 5V and 3V3. |
