I think you need to qualify that!

eg, PC power supplies still give many Amps at 5V...
(and even more at 3V)

I doubt (do not know) much in a PC still use 5V

and it should have been "I fail to see a modern '51 based design needing ....
sometimes I do not qualify that my posts in a '51 forum are '51 based

and thus it is no surprise it is discontinued.
More likely is that switch-mode designs are now favoured for such applications?

absolutely, the power loss with a linear regulator (notably a non-LDO) at higher currents is non-green and may add cooling costs
