Well, the serial port works perfectly well when I'm not relying on interrupts. It seems to me that the wiring must therefore be correct. The receive data, the transmit data and the driver enable/disable serial port pin (in fact all the hardware) must surely be working in order for me to be able to send and receive bytes? I haven't changed anything to try to use interrupts except to set the bits ES1 and EA.
