Thanks for your comment. I believe I've done this correctly.
setb ES1 setb EA is 'correct' HOWEVER ES1 is a nonstandard bit check against the assembler list that you get the right result. Just a thought have you checked the wiring? have you checked the correct port pins? if the '320 has configurable ports, have you checked port configuration? One quick check that works for most UARTs: briefly touch Rxd on the the chip with a grounded wire, that should start the UART. try it for your 'working' UART0 first, that should tell you if it works for your chip.
