This is a rather strange Pierce oscillator, isn't it? Replacing a burden cap by a high ohmic resistor at high frequencies?? To provide what?? I suspect it's the parasitic inductance of the high impedance resistor that shall make this darn thing work? But such parasitics are highly unpredicable, if no special brand is recommended. What a nonsense!!

The oscillator of the AT89S8253 is "unique", like some other "issues" of the AT89S8253, but not at all common to the Pierce oscillator design Atmel uses in the other micros. If so, I wouldn't use Atmel's micros any longer.
