#174888 - RE: a small external PCB with a MAX232

What I have done on some occsions is to have a small plug on the uC PCB that fit a small external PCB with a MAX232(derivative) and associated circuitry that interfaces to a PC with FlashMagic (if you use Atmel, that would be Flip). Would that work for you.

Yes, I've done that in the past.

Nowadays, there is very little point in messing about with the MAX232 (or equivalent) - just use one of these, which gives you a direct logic-level (5V and 3V versions available) UART connection from a USB port:

All you need on the uC board is a 6-way 0.1" header connector (as, presumably, you would for the MAX232 board).
