#172006 - Load Not Triggering a Shift Cycle
Responding to: ???'s previous message
The load pulse does NOT initiate a shift cycle. The 'HC165 part has eight flip-flops that either load from the parallel input lines OR get data from the previous flip-flop in a shift cycle. The QH output loads asynchronously from the H input and is immediately available to the MCU port pin without any shift cycle.

A shift cycle only becomes necessary when you would like to move the input value stored in the QG flip-flop over to the QH stage where it can then be seen by the MCU.
