It looks like my "new" cable was the problem after all. After switching it out for another cable I had, everything works as it should. Thank you all for your patience! It's always the simple things...
Incidentally, reading through the datasheet on the MAX232 chips, it seems like using one will provide a reasonable level of isolation and ESD protection. When worrying about induced voltages and noise in an industrial environment, is this level of protection sufficient or is it wise to step up to opto isolation? If so, which one would you recommend for 9600 baud? Thanks again everyone! |
