Assume, that ticks in the range x...x+a give a display reading of 1MPH, ticks in the range y...y+b give a reading of 2MPH, and so on. Then, list the limits of all these ticks' ranges in a table, like x+a, x, y+b, y, ... resulting in 512 entries for 256 speeds. The first two entries (x+a and x) belong to 1MPH, the second two to 2MPH, a.s.o. Then, you only need to find out to which interval your actual ticks fit.
