#161750 - File system? Responding to: ???'s previous message |
One of the reasons people often think of USB "pen drives" like this is that they are easy to just plug into a PC. What they forget (or don't realise) is that there is an awful lot of software hidden away in the PC in order to make it so.
So, to make a USB device just plug into your embedded system, you would also need a large amount of software to make it appear "easy". As the old saying goes, it takes a great deal of effort to make something appear "effortless" Of course, plugging-in the USB device is just the first step: if you want any PC to be able to "just read" the data, you will also have to implement a File System that the PC understands. I beleive that the Vinculum chip mentioned by Erik provides both the USB Host interface and a file system? Christoph Franck said:
Such as SD/MMC cards or even CompactFlash cards. Their protocols don't require dedicated hardware. True - but, again, if you want any PC to be able to "just read" the data, you will still require a suitable File System. Otherwise, you will also have to write a custom PC application to retrieve the data. |
