You are mixing apples with oranges, for your comparison to be logical you should compare talented programmers with degrees with talented programmers with no qualifications, who would you choose? Usually talented people with no degrees start their own business or work as freelancers because it is much more rewarding than mopping floors or getting a low salary because of their qualifications.
