and find that recent grads (as mentioned) are useless for anything but training.

the below is SOLELY based on interviewing for embedded systems below 512k

my experience is surprising (even to me) the MS grads are far less knowledgeable about the basics (they must have forgotten them) than the BS grads.

I have no doubt that if what you were developing required "scientific investigation" the MS grads might be the better choice, but for getting an embedded product out the door the BS interviews have been much more promising.
