architectures that you can look at:
ARM: sort of the 51 of this century, plenty of chip vendors and excellent free tool chain by Keil with limit of 32kbytes, which is quite enough for starting with. There is a vendor in India NGX technologies who has some boards quite reasonably priced so do other chip vendors including TI and Freescale.
PIC: Good support in India, and excellent forum too. But development software is just about tolerable and proprietary architecture.
AVR: I have never used. Also proprietary architecture.
MSP430: Tolerable tool chain, but poor company support in India. Also proprietary architecture.


BTW, Keil itself is worth learning.
Top class simulation and very good documentation right upto RTOS.
