You said that "most micros have DAC's" or some such, and, while I don't disagree with what you've said about how to approach this problem, I have seen rather few MCU's with DAC's, while many of them have ADC's.

At least one of those "itty-bitty" SiLabs MCU's has a DAC, several of them have ADC's and no DAC.

Which ones have you encountered that have DAC's? How fast can they produce a waveform without "too much" (whatever that means) distortion?
