#182478 - Flashy look is what drives us
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Are there any deteriorating price / performance with Windows?

Note that the performance of the machines gets constantly scaled up without a corresponding price change.

But it is true that Intel + Microsoft are non-green companies. The amount of power consumed by a new PC is way higher than it was 10 years ago. Even when not starting 3D games, the graphics cards consumes large amounts of power. And we get a gazillion services that are running in the background.

But the biggest problem is not really there. Even worse is all companies designing web pages with very inefficient active content. If we open a news paper page, our web browsers will instantly start to consume a number of percent of extra CPU capacity. And since several web browsers are now offloading some of the rendering to the graphcis cards, we also get higher load on them.

We are living in a world where we - the consumers - constantly votes by selecting the flashiest software, hardware, web pages, ... And we are paying the price. Intel + Microsoft are in the end just supplying exactly what we are showing a big interest in buying.
