And, in fact, you are the only one whom I know to have actually used a FPGA/hardcore 8-bitter combo.
I think I've speculated already about this issue here or on avrfreaks.net - the requirement (read: price) to deal with two different "philosophies" and two different toolchains is maybe too high for most of the potential applications. And, these days, companies like Lynn Reed's Tekmos can deliver you a real chip for maybe a similar price and effort than you've spend on the FPGA/harcore combo.
