True - but they are usually for use with 5V, 12V or higher supplies - aren't they?

maybe that is what they used.

Maybe - but I don't see any mention of that at all.

There doesn't seem to be any guidance whatsoever on the selection of the LEDs - certainly nothing to say, "make sure you get the ones with built-in resistors for use on 3V"

BTW: I have posted a comment on the Electronics Weekly site - but it is awaiting "approval" before it gets displayed...
