As a professional engineer, the cost of a schematic capture and PCB layout package can usually be justified. I'm a bit perplexed why some of the very expensive stuff continues to thrive when IMO some of the cheaper stuff is better, but that's just my experience.

There also seem to be some decent tools for the hobbyist in the sub £100 price range, but they are a different beast from the professional stuff. The difficulty I have is that I don't want to use the hobby stuff after using professional tools!

The cost of profesional tools can be justified by your employer, I wouldnt personaly spend more than 10 quid for any peice of software.I get used to using decent tools at work and find the horrible stuff just makes life more difficult.
