I once tried to remove the mains fuse from a live radio, its not something you do twice.

Interestingly though, despite you saying that engineers are risk adverse I do get involved in stupid bike races in which the ambulance and doctors car are always in attendance following behind the race to scrape up the wounded.In one of my first races there was a particularly nasty crash on a difficult corner where the guy was doing about 45 MPH and ended up being airlifted to hospital, somehow you kind of put these things to the back of your mind and carry on.
