#171368 - about those MCU's Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I have the opportunity (wrong word?) to modify an old system that used a variation on the 8048. The actual chip is 8021. Does anyone recall any hands-on experience with device programmers and these beasts? The project only requires a minor modification, but there is no source code. If the devices can be read with an (old) device programmer, it might be possible to read the current program, disassemble and then possibly patch in some kind of change. So I guess my first question is, do the devices support code protection? Darned if I can find a data sheet for an 8021. About the 802x's ... While I've seen 'em, I've never used 'em, since there never was, AFAIK, a field-programmable version. At the time these were popular, the parts numbered 80xx were ROM-based. The 8748/49 were cerdip's and EPROM-based, hence, field-programmable, and there might even have been some OTP's, though I never encountered them either. I realize that considering the code size in these little beasts it might be better to forward engineer than reverse engineer -- and I might do that, but it would be nice to look at the code because right now all I have to go by is the old user manual. And we all know how accurate they are.
I've got the old databooks on these, but they're thick ... and I just finished moving, so I have about 250 paper-boxes full of books to search through. It may take some time to find 'em, and it WILL take time to scan the necessary chapters. Since they're not reprogrammable, I'd not worry about 'em. Since they're presumably not field-programmable, my programmers won't read 'em either, since they don't have a programming algorithm. I still have a "stock", mostly "experienced" of i8748's. I last used an i8748 on a one-off that was a freebie. RE |
