#170930 - There's a clue there!

I find that if you leave the flashlight turned on and go away, returning after the battery is discharged, you might as well toss out the battery

The trouble with series-connected batteries - just as in any "chain" - is that there will always be a weakest cell that will be discharged first. If you leave the pack on-load beyond that point, that cell is effectively being reverse-charged - which will kill it very quickly!

To get optimum life from a battery pack needs careful control of both charging and discharge. Ideally, there would be a cut-off to avoid damage due to over-discharge - but many (most?) consumer devices skimp on this.

because it can no longer be recharged after being totally discharged, even once, and even with a brand-new battery.

It is a bit surprising that it can be that bad after just one episode!!
