Yes - they some times are pain in the ass!
I have cheked out a few things with the guys we use for testing and verifying - mainly EMC but also EN61010 and that sort of stuff. There aren't any electrical rules, as long as the voltage is below 50V AC or 60V DC. There might be machine safety related rules. Talking mains voltage is something completely difrent. Since this is related to ground, you MUST switch the Live wire. So the customer get what (s)he wants, of course.
