Well, Richard might have to explain what he was actually thinking, but my take was:

Most of the baud rates are well-separated - mostly by a factor of 2 - so it should be possible to look at how long the response took, and take a guess at its speed from that.
This does, of course, assume that you can get suitably precises timing - which may require some extra pin(s)...
