I doubt you're wrong in your statement, but it would be good to know what you mean by better, and perhaps go into some detail as to how it would be implemented.
It's easy to say, "Use this $4 device ..." and then omit the $50 worth of additional hardware that's needed. Now, I'm not saying that's the case here, but, for example ... what would it cost to build a one-off, where a PCB is required, and so on? He's going to have to build a PCB, of course, and since his LVDT is probably a bit more costly than the device you mentioned, I doubt that will discourage him, but ... the devil's in the details.
