The ADC in the 8840/42 takes around 80 samples per second. In 'Slow' reading mode, 32 of these samples are averaged to give a 5 1/2 digit stable result.
The reason this reading is as stable as it is, is that Fluke's engineers have put in an extraordinary amount of effort to make it so.

Now, just for fun, change the reading rate to 'Medium' or even 'Fast' ... See what happens?
