Btw. bipolar _transistors_ were still dominating in speed some 15 years ago (compared to _silicon_ MOSFETs); the "only" problem was the high process complexity (too many processing steps), low density of integration and high power consumption. For the "small computers", CMOS was a must even deep in the 70s (you can't build a _micro_processor from bipolars). For the "real computers", bipolars were still in use throughout the 80s. JW |
