#142589 - Gas igniters
Responding to: ???'s previous message

I use a gas igniter for my ESD tests. Not particularly scientific or traceable, but if my equipment survives this, there's a fair chance it will pass the real test.

We analyzed these gas igniters and found out, that they produce a suffiently high voltage, but without any relevant energy. If you have a look at the human body model, you will find a "storage" capacitance of 100pF, which is charged up to the high voltage and which becomes discharged during the ESD hit. If you discharge the ESD into a 100nF capacitor, for instance, then you will find a voltage of about

15kV * 100pF / 100nF = 15V

afterwards.

But with the gas igniter you won't find any useful storage capacitance and as consequence there's no useful ESD energy. So, trying to "test" a product by the help of a gas igniter can hardly give you any useful information. If it succeeds this "testing", then you still don't know anything about the true CE compliance.

Me, I pay someone to do it!!! I'm lucky that there is a local lab that has the right gear but isn't certified or traceable that charges me $200 for a pre-compliance for a handful of tests before i spend $8000+ for the *real* tests. The cheap guy turns out to be more knowlegable and helpful than the expensive lab that employs fresh graduate engineers that know very little.

That's a good idea. We do the same!
