#142575 - Backyard susceptance testing
Responding to: ???'s previous message

I use a gas igniter for my ESD tests. Not particularly scientific or traceable, but if my equipment survives this, there's a fair chance it will pass the real test.

For the ext field tests, get a copy of the relevant EN standard - this costs $$$, you can always go to the local university and *opy it (not kosher) or simply have a read and jot down some notes. In some instances, the standard will prescribe a test setup. For your rf field tests you'll need at a minimum a rf signal generator - it doesn't need to be accurate or stable and maybe a wideband rf amp to give you enough signal to drive the antenna. The magnetic field tests are a bit easier to do at home!

Maybe once you've done your research you might come to the conclusion that it is easier to pay someone with the right equipment to do the right job. Anyway, with a little research you'll better understand the process.

Me, I pay someone to do it!!! I'm lucky that there is a local lab that has the right gear but isn't certified or traceable that charges me $200 for a pre-compliance for a handful of tests before i spend $8000+ for the *real* tests. The cheap guy turns out to be more knowlegable and helpful than the expensive lab that employs fresh graduate engineers that know very little. Within minutes, he'll tell me the cpu crystal frequency and whether I've got a switchmode psu or whether the buck converter is in discontinuous mode!
