Why not using the HW SPI? Are we talking about an AT89S52 ? in most cases the HW SPI is allready in use for serial programming. That will conflict many many times with additional HW. Especially a beginner to 8x51 micros will get stuck. However, you are a well exeperienced guy so why can't you concentrate on helping others to find a simple way first ? http://www.mikrocontroller.net/attachmen...ltplan.PNG Now I will be killed :-| the given link will show you the basic design of an ENC connected to an AVR.
