Thank you for the link and I ordered a copy. Proton Precession Magnetometers are the preferred method (over fluxgate,GMR or even the good ol' Dip Needle of days gone by). The Proton measures the total strength of the magnetic field but not it's direction where a fluxgate measures the component of the field along the axis of the sensor so it's critical to keeping it vertical.
