Yes, IIRC, these like to see a 25-volt Vpp.
I don't think the 'C' version was much better ... wasnt' its Vpp 21 volts? I had a few 27C32's some years back, but they were begged away. I still have quite a lot of standard TTL, too. I find it interesting that some functions available in standard and 'L' ttl never became popular in LS or S varieties. Tristate counters, for example, might have saved a lot of multiplexers in the DRAM days. I occasionally used the NSC 85L54's. They're 16-pin tristate 4-bit presettable synchronous binary counters.
