From what I read (http://silicongenesis.stanford.edu/complete_...sting.html - interviews with Stan Mazor and Ted Hoff, and they shall know the best), there were two groups in Intel developing 4004 and 8008 more-less simultaneously, from two different initial ideas. Of course they shared some experience and methods... I don't know 8008 but from I've read now on 4004 and what I remember from my early 8080 and Z80 days, IMHO the 8048 resembles 4004 closer than 8080.

I will continue on this topic in the other thread, as this got OT.
