It is a burden to those who have to rely on others to handle that shoveling task. My Mom had already cleared her sidewalk, or, actually, hired it done. The *sshole who subsequently scraped the snow back onto her walks in order to make a parking space was not doing a service to anyone other than himself, though. I see that as WAY beyond inconsiderate. I'm guessing that he's not the only one that used the street once he plowed it. Now if you're complaining about plowing a single parking place in front of your mom's home and dumping that snow onto a shoveled walk then, yes, I agree, that's inconsiderate. He should've done it in front of his own home or at least cleaned up after himself. But I see nothing wrong with people plowing the street itself if the only side effect is the creation of some berms that happen to mildly obstruct driveways. Perhaps we had a mite more than Craig's neighborhood. THe snow pile next to the cut into my Mom's driveway is about 4 feet deep, which obscures view while backing out of the driveway. There was a 10-foot (~3 meters) drift from my rooftop to my neighbor's SUV in his driveway, which completely blocked my driveway. I don't know, my neighborhood was pretty full. Our snow pile on the sides of our driveway were about 3.5-4 feet, too, and the highest mountain of snow I made while shoveling was approaching six feet (since it was about as high as I am tall). Drifting will obviously vary with the exact amount of snow, wind, and the eddies that form around houses and objects. We had a ton of drifting in our backyard which, luckily, faces north so our south-facing front yard/driveway has the benefit of sunlight and the layout is such that we didn't get much drifting in our front yard. If I hadn't had help, I'd still be stuck here. Blizzards are the closest thing Denver has to New Orleans hurricanes or California earthquakes. If you can't tolerate some snow shutting things down every now and then, maybe Denver isn't the best place to live. Personally, I prefer being trapped in my house for a few days or even a week to having my house flooded by a hurricane or knocked down by an earthquake or leveled by a tornado or burned down by a brushfire. Given the option, I'll take the blizzard. The city didn't clear the streets, nor did they pick up trash this week. The major streets were fine when I left Thursday evening. I know the side streets weren't (nor was mine... I had to shovel some snow off our street in order to get to the main road that luckily isn't that far away). But my thought is that, you know, mother nature is very powerful and it is folly to believe we can eliminate the inconvenience that it can cause us from time to time. It is also inappropriate to depend or expect the government to solve all our problems. When you put the government up against nature, I generally assume that nature will win and am neither surprised nor overly critical when my assumption is correct. (I do love to complain, don't I?) Yes. Regards, Craig Steiner |
