Move to the "free" tools?

I have a colleague here doing programmable logic and he never had other choice than to get away with the "free" (vendor-provided, low-cost, "starter" grade etc.) tools - OK he doesn't do even nearly the SOIC-like complexity - but also you have noticed that we live slightly eastward of you... :-) Well, technically, I'd bet he could save a lot of troubles he now has, would he have the "full" tools plus an appropriate support... But he also lacks adequate training etc. so this experience is of infinitesimally small relevance for you...
