The purpose of that whole exercise is to ensure that the students don't end up with junk, yet can buy cheap parts.

You talk about previously, you talk about one year only.

If never done before, never to be done again, why the effort?

If this was done last year use last years project as a tester, if it was not, leave it alone, the first student project that works can be used as a tester.
