If you used a battery for power and there were no line powered instruments attached to the circuit nothing should have smoked.
Think about what else was attached that is not part of the shown circuit. The complete input will need to have esd and over range protection designed in as well as range selection assuming that it is not a single range dedicated device where it will only need esd and spike protection side note Can I borrow your meter? :) I am off today to service a 60 kw RF glue drier 11000 volts dc into a triode tube.
