You're right. A FUNDAMENTAL understanding of the processor is needed to write ANYTHING on an 8052 or embedded ucontroller.

The usual thing to do is to get to grips with the architecture search for references to the "bible" here.

For me, doing assembler programming on the processor trains you well to write good HLL on it afterwards.
