#110541 - differences
Responding to: ???'s previous message
cpld can be thought of as alarge number of interconnected simple PAL devices with simple interconnections, and FPGA is a large number of interconnected CPLDs with addition features such as on board memory, high speed memory interfaces, some have ethernet macs, hardware multipliers,DSP blocks and some have built in processors. The other main difference is a cpld retains its configuration if it is powered down a fpga is sram based so it needs to have its configuration rewritten each time it is powered up usualy from a serial eeprom. Also FPGAs generaly have configuarble I/O blocks which means that they can support adaptive output impeadance which is vital for high speed boards with long traces.
The latest FPGAs are now targetted at 'system on chip' designs devices like the xilinx virtex 4 are seriously powerful
