I read Stefan's posting after I made my posting. You know that he is right in questioning where you have the 3ohm simulated load placed. When you put the load here in series with the supply the net effect when you set the FET on the gate will only go up to about 7 volts or so. You need to place the load in the FET drain circuit so that current through the load does not cause a change of the bias levels of the part between the off and on state.
