#175322 - My Suggestion
Responding to: ???'s previous message

a)I want it to be faster, so, can I simply use a crystal oscillator with a higher operating frequency?

Yes you can do it. See the datasheet it tells you about Max. Crystal frequency in 12x mode and 6x mode.

b)Will programming the chip with a different crystal oscillator and using another for operation pose any problems?

You mean that you will use one crystal for programming and the other crystal for use in the product? Yes you can do it.
I have built a small board that has MAX232, 12Mhz Crystal with power supply and other things necessary for ISP. Use Flashmagic to program the CPU.
After programming the CPU, I remove the CPU from the socket on this board, and put it into the final product that has 24MHz crystal. It works fine. So you get the idea, even yours will will work too. So my home-made, small board, is working like an IC programmer for MCS51(with ISP Feature) ICs.

c)Is there any practical upper limit to the frequency that the chip can work on?

As suggested by others, read the datasheet, it contains all these details.
The very first page of the datasheet says:
5 V Operating Voltage from 0MHz to 40MHz.
Still read the datasheet for the details. Don't just look at the advertisement of the product, look at its datasheet before you buy it.
